Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle deep in the buttock tightens and irritates the nearby sciatic nerve, producing buttock pain and sciatica-like symptoms that radiate down the leg. It is often worse with sitting, climbing, or prolonged activity.

Symptoms of Piriformis Syndrome

  • Deep aching or pain in the buttock
  • Sciatica-like pain radiating down the leg
  • Pain that worsens with sitting or stair climbing
  • Tenderness deep in the buttock muscle
  • Discomfort that eases with gentle movement

What causes Piriformis Syndrome?

A tight, overused, or spasming piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve. Prolonged sitting, overtraining, or anatomical variation can contribute.

Frequently asked questions

How is piriformis syndrome different from sciatica?

Both cause radiating leg pain, but piriformis syndrome originates from a tight buttock muscle compressing the sciatic nerve, whereas classic sciatica usually starts from a spinal nerve root.

What relieves piriformis pain?

Image-guided piriformis injections combined with a dedicated stretching routine relax the muscle and relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.
