Medial Branch Radiofrequency

Medial branch radiofrequency ablation provides longer-lasting facet-joint pain relief using radiofrequency energy. It is indicated for back or neck pain confirmed by a successful diagnostic medial branch block, and relief commonly lasts 6 to 12 months or longer.

What it treats

This procedure is commonly used to treat Chronic Neck Pain, Lower Back Pain and Sacroiliac Joint Disease.

How it works

Under image guidance, Dr. Taheem uses radiofrequency energy to gently heat and interrupt the medial branch nerves so they can no longer transmit pain from the facet joint. The targeted nerves carry only pain signals, not strength or sensation to the limbs.

What to expect

The outpatient procedure takes about 30-45 minutes. Relief often develops over a couple of weeks and can last many months; because nerves slowly regenerate, the treatment can be safely repeated when needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is radiofrequency ablation safe?

Yes — it targets only the small sensory nerves to the facet joints under image guidance, and is a well-established, low-risk procedure.
