Sympathetic & Plexus Nerve Blocks
Sympathetic and plexus nerve blocks place anesthetic near sympathetic nerve clusters — such as the stellate ganglion or lumbar sympathetic chain — to interrupt abnormal pain signaling. They are used for complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and other sympathetically-driven pain.
Request a consultationWhat it treats
This procedure is commonly used to treat Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and Tailbone Pain (Coccydynia).
How it works
Dr. Taheem injects anesthetic near the relevant sympathetic ganglion or plexus under image guidance. Interrupting this abnormal signaling can reduce pain and improve blood flow and function in the affected area.
What to expect
A series of blocks is sometimes used as part of a comprehensive CRPS plan. The procedure is minimally invasive, and early treatment offers the best chance of calming the overactive nervous system.
Frequently asked questions
What is a stellate ganglion block?
It is a sympathetic block in the neck used for CRPS and certain pain and circulation problems of the upper body.
Why are several blocks sometimes needed?
Sympathetically-driven pain often responds best to a series of blocks that progressively calm the overactive nervous system.
